Hi, Ed, Let me fill you in on what's happened since we were in Kenya. I know you remember our visit to ACCES (African Canadian Continuing Education Society) in Kakamega. Of everything I saw, including my own beautiful school in Wusi, the ACCES program was what I most wanted to send money to. At the time, I didn't have much. Then my four-year drunk driver case was finally settled, and I'm in regular contact with Marie MacKay, the ACCES AIDS nurse who was so compelling in what she told us about her work and about the kids, as well as KESHO, the American counterpart, which gives a U.S. tax receipt for donations. I have no children, and it's the children of Kenya who gave me my whole career, if not my life, so I've promised them $100,000 over the next few years. I'll put one of their brochures in the check I send you. It's not that I'm rolling in dough, but I've always had enough and went into (small) debt just once -- to do Kampala '03 -- so it's a late-in-life pleasure to be able to help those beautiful kids we saw. By the way, it wasn't the drunk driver we sued but the Mafia-connected strip joint that served her the alcohol until nearly 5:30 a.m. Is n't it satisfying that their insurance, translated through a tax-free settlement, can go to African kids? It should be called laundering money. The real way. Regards, Linda Kunz |
