This is the fourth year of fundraising for scholarships for Mackay. This one was even bigger and easier, and I didn't even offer a dinner. When people know where the money is going and that it's going directly to a school, they are much more likely to contribute. There are 31 students on half tuition and two on full tuition. Tuition at Mackay is about $164, depending on the exchange rate. The students are so appreciative. I understand why TEAA voted not to fund scholarships. Computers, books, and equipment stay at the school, students leave. But our friends and we have had a good time with this. Gertrude [the principal] reports that enrollment has grown from 300 in 2003 to 600 in 2006. Thanks to TEAA they now have 20 computers and a new lab. Following is a student report: It was really a blessing to our parents and guardians who were working hard to make ends meet. They felt so happy and relieved when they heard that some kindhearted people had come to their rescue. The fact that we have this opportunity of a lifetime, we cannot afford to miss it. We read so hard in order not to lose the scholarship since it caters for needy but bright students. At the end of it all, we do not want to regret for having not used this opportunity profitably. We want to make our sponsors happy so we work hard in order not to be dropped off the list. We want them to live and see their effort and the seeds sown. We please our sponsors by getting good grades. We also want to thank the entire Mackay Memorial College Administration and staff for their commitment to work. |
