Dear Ed, I do hope you and the team members are fine and doing well. The shores of Lake Victoria where my [new] school is are now extremely hot with temperatures sometimes as high as 42, quite unlike the Mukuyu area. Establishing structures where none at all existed has not been very easy. Am always in meetings trying to draw plans and communicating my vision to the stakeholders here but of course there are compensations and we eat a lot of fish! I get comforted sometimes when I am low by the look of my enthusiastic students who seem to be urging me on. They are a great motivation to me and I really love them. Since the compound is situated on a small hill, and prone to the wind, this week we have been planting trees to serve as wind breaks- what the people around here found quite funny and odd since nobody around here bothers with trees, the land is quite bare which makes soil erosion a problem to contend with a lot. Of course, my other love is Poetry and Drama as you already know. Just this week I began training the students to recite my latest poem that I wrote in appreciation of the desert that I think this place is, its title is "Desert Drums," while yesterday with my Form 2 Class, we sketched something about the behavior of our students. They were so excited and I got so encouraged! I think I shall have a great future with them. Hoping to hear from you soon. Okunya |
